A. B. C. MERRIMAN-LABOR
Augustus Merriman-Labor (1877â1919) was born in Freetown, Sierra Leone. He worked as a clerk for the colonial authorities whilst also developing his literary career by writing. Amongst other work, he wrote a novella and, in 1898, an anonymous exposé of Britainâs Hut Tax War against the people of Sierra Leone. In 1904 he travelled to London where he worked as a clerk, taught Sunday school in South London and trained as a barrister at Lincolnâs Inn. He also continued with his writing and published his most famous satirical work, Britons Through Negro Spectacles, to dispel illusions that other Africans might have about Britain. The book was not a commercial success, and other business failures led to bankruptcy and disbarment. Merriman-Labor was later a munitions worker at the Woolwich Arsenal and died of tuberculosis in Lambeth Workhouse. The following extracts demonstrate the satirical style of his writing about some of his experiences in London.
